Introduction to the Relevant Microbiological Characteristics

Aspergillus genus (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger)

The bacterial cells have septate branching hyphae, apical sacs, and radial conidiophores; Aspergillus flavus has yellow green fuzzy colonies, while Aspergillus niger has black brown fuzzy colonies; Saprophytic, Aspergillus flavus produces aflatoxin, and immunocompromised individuals can induce pulmonary aspergillosis.

Penicillium

The bacterial cells have septate hyphae, and the conidiophores have typical broom shaped branches; Blue-green fuzzy colonies; Most saprophytes are penicillin producing bacteria, and a few can cause eye and skin infections.

Mucor

The bacterial cells have thick septiceless hyphae and sporangia; White cotton like, spreading and growing rapidly; Immune deficient individuals are prone to invasive mucormycosis.

Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans

Milk white smooth cheese like colony; Sprout reproduction, Candida can form pseudohyphae; May cause surface and deep fungal infections.
