Clinical application scenarios

Food mold and yeast count: total fungal count detection of samples such as grains and pastries. Adding chloramphenicol can inhibit bacteria.

Preliminary screening of moldy and toxic fungi: Isolation of toxin producing fungi from spoiled grains and fruits and vegetables, observation of morphology and spore characteristics to assist in identification.

Preliminary screening and prediction of coconut fungus: Suspected bacterial colonies can be quickly identified in samples of spoiled Tremella fuciformis and rice flour poisoning using yellow water-soluble pigments.

Purification and preservation of fungal strains: revival, expanded cultivation, and short-term preservation of standard fungal strains.

Distinguishing Fungi from Coconut Toxinus: Fungi have long fuzzy hyphae and limited pigments; Coconut fungus spreads smoothly and the overall culture medium turns yellow.

Clinical superficial fungal culture: initial cultivation of specimens such as dandruff and sputum to assist in screening for fungal infections.

Introduction to the Relevant Microbiological Characteristics

Burkholderia cocos

Biological characteristics: Gram negative short rod-shaped bacteria, terminal single flagella, active in movement, without spores or capsules; Can produce water-soluble toxic yellow pigment and highly toxic citric acid; Preferring high sugar and weakly acidic environments, natural potato substrates are beneficial for bacterial recovery; Fermented glucose, does not ferment lactose, does not produce H ₂ S, is tolerant to weak acids but not to high concentrations of bile salts, strong inhibitors such as Brilliant Green, etc.

Cultivation characteristics on PDA: The colonies are gray white or milky white, smooth and moist, with a diameter of about 1-2mm; yellow green or yellow water-soluble pigments diffuse into the culture medium around the colonies, and the colonies show yellow fluorescence under ultraviolet light (wavelength 365nm); Some colonies have a raised center, resembling a "straw hat".
