Product Overview

【 Principle 】

Peptone and beef extract provide carbon sources, nitrogen sources, vitamins, and minerals; Lactose is a fermentable sugar; Bile salt No. 3, sodium citrate, and brilliant green inhibit Gram positive bacteria, most Escherichia coli, and Proteobacteria, but do not affect the growth of Salmonella; Sodium thiosulfate and iron citrate are used to detect the production of hydrogen sulfide, causing the center of the colony to appear black; Neutral red serves as a pH indicator. Bacteria that ferment sugar to produce acid appear red, while bacteria that do not ferment sugar appear colorless; Agar is a coagulant for culture media.

Main components

Composed of peptone, beef extract, lactose, bile salt No. 3, sodium citrate, brilliant green, sodium thiosulfate, iron citrate, neutral red, agar, and distilled water.

Clinical application scenarios

Clinical fecal specimen isolation: used for selective isolation and cultivation of Salmonella and Shigella in the feces of diarrhea patients.

Food safety testing: As a national standard culture medium, it is used for detecting Salmonella contamination in meat, dairy products and other foods.

Identification and interpretation of bacterial colonies: Salmonella (colorless transparent with black heart), Shigella (colorless transparent without black heart), Escherichia coli (peach red).

Introduction to the Relevant Microbiological Characteristics

Salmonella: Gram negative flagellar bacteria, does not ferment lactose, produces H ₂ S; the colony is colorless and transparent, with a black center; Resistant to high concentration SS inhibitors and grows well. Pathogenesis: typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, foodborne enteritis.

Shigella: G ⁻ flagellar free bacteria, does not ferment lactose and does not produce H ₂ S; the colony is colorless, semi transparent, and has no black heart; Partial sensitive Shiga is easily suppressed and missed by SS. Pathogenesis: Bacterial dysentery.
